Then we moved into math where students learned about the abacus. We learned when, where, why, and how and viewed different kinds from different cultures. Students practice at the SMART Board and using "Kids Abacus" on the iTouches. Next students worked to construct their own Chinese abacus using beads, skewers, and popsicle sticks. While they waited for the "Glue Master" to use the hot glue gun to put it together they worked on reading the abacus and placing the beads on a handout, then moved into the Shakespeare stations. There was A LOT going on in our STRIDE room but students handled it beautifully and were very efficient with our time. We checked the math handouts together and I kept the abacuses for our next math block.
We ended our day in Money working with checks and ledgers. First we reviewed check writing and I gave feedback on common problems from last week. Next each student got a ledger, six checks, and $5,000 and we had a checking account bonanza! Students spun a spinner at the SMART Board and then recorded the result in their ledgers writing checks as appropriate. We had a lot of visits to the vet and car repairs! Ask your child how his/her account ended up.
Students have the permission slip for our NCMA field trip on December 1st. If you would like to chaperone, there's a place to check. There are only a few chaperone slots available, as several schools are going on one day and the museum has given us a limit.
For homework this week:
1. Math: Archimedes-solve the puzzles and read to learn more
2. MOG: Fill in as much as you can about Archimedes
3. Money: Create your ECON! card by writing one vocabulary term in each box. Term only. (You will use most of them but not all.) Read over all of the definitions.
4. Permission slip completed
