A "notebook check" was next. We made sure that the homework tab is first and added the "Check It Out!" sheet for assignments. We also added a copy of our Structures generalizations for reference throughout the year.
I introduced our STRIDE Google Classroom. Students have an email inviting them to join. This is a great place for me to post assignments and for students to chat with each other about what they're learning. Your child has an information sheet and a contract.
Next we spent a chunk of time going over STRIDE routines, materials' locations, rewards, curriculum, "jobs",etc. It was like the first day of school. I hope we know everything we need to know!
We ended our day with our first Construction Concepts lesson. First we discussed and defined the terms structure, gravity, weight, and support. Students gave evidence and examples to support each definition. Groups of students worked together to apply these terms by constructing a structure using straws, pins, and paperclips. Several groups built a successful structure; however, the important part was for students to observe what support worked against the force of gravity and develop the idea that the design and the materials are both important. I hope students will keep their eyes open this week for additional support ideas.
Homework this week:
1. Google Classroom: Read the letter together, sign the contract, and sign up for the Classroom.
2. Vision/Life board: Students will create a display using the guidelines on the sheet.
3. Return your Boomerang Envelope if you didn't already.
Thanks so much for any supplies you've sent!
See below for a few photos from today. I'm looking forward to next week!
