Sir Isaac Newton occupied much of our STRIDE morning. First students shared their homework posters at tables, and then we moved on to our Moment of Genius to organize what they learned about him on our MOG charts. I love the connections they are making, and could tell that many of them were very thorough with their research! This led us into our Roller Coaster Physics lesson for today where students completed two activities to investigate Newton's 1st Law. The activities were simple; however, explaining what happened using science vocabulary proved to be more challenging. I kept reading and sending them back to revise and reading again until we all got it. Next we viewed several video clips demonstrating the First Law in football, with a Slinky, and some cool "tricks". Ask your child to tell you all about it! We ended with me providing feedback on their summaries from Science Friction in their science journals. They will complete another summary for homework this week.
In Probability we returned to last week's activities, analyzing and discussing "More Spinning Around" and "Is This A Fair Game" together. Students' did great, and they are continuing to grow in their understanding of theoretical and experimental probability.
Marketing was our focus for the rest of our day. We did lots and lots of comparing, contrasting, and examining advantages and disadvantages. We began with radio ads, finishing up last week, and then moved into four types of print ads: magazine, flyer, brochure, and newspaper. We used the print ads students brought in as a springboard for discussing what makes print ads interesting. Students then moved into reading and evaluating advantages and disadvantages of each type. We'll pick up here next week.
We had two Franklin Findings shared today, decided we like eating lunch in the STRIDE room instead of the cafeteria, and enjoyed recess in the beautiful, sunny weather.
We WILL have STRIDE next week on 11/23 since it's now a half day. Students will come to STRIDE at 8:00.
The only homework this week is to write at least a paragraph summary of Newton's First Law with examples. Students should also try to think of other real life situations where the First Law is used. They can list these on the same journal page.
