Students began by playing "STRIDE Bingo" to get to know each other and have a preview of some of the things we'll be learning this year. There was lots of interaction and fun conversation.
The main theme of our day was "There's a LOT to know about STRIDE!" I spent much of the day explaining, and students spent much of their time listening and asking questions. I see why parents didn't have many questions at Open House...the students saved them all for me! We covered so many topics:
- STRIDE routines
- materials' locations
- expectations and PAWS
- consequences and rewards
- Brain Boosters and Brain Beads
- "missing" class
- this year's curriculum
- our Structures generalizations
- Table of the Month
- marble jar
- technology responsibilities
- and I'm sure I've left out something!
We also did a "notebook check", making sure that the homework tab is first in the binder and adding the "Check It Out!" sheet for recording assignments. We also added a copy of our Structures generalizations for reference throughout the year and a Franklin Findings form.
Groups briefly discussed and defined "Excellence is in the details," relating it to school work and life. This was an introduction to their MOH (Matters of the Heart) homework assignment: the Vision/Life Board. Students will think about themselves currently and their ideas about the future, then use the guiding questions to create a display board or a presentation using technology. Sharing these will help us get to know each other even more next week.
After lunch and recess (including procedures!), our day ended with an introduction to our STRIDE Google Classroom. Many of the students have participated in a Google Classroom previously, and if not, they will catch on quickly. We will complete this next week. However, students have an email inviting them to join, and they are welcome to go ahead and sign up! This is a great place for me to post assignments and resources and for students to chat with each other about what they're learning. Your child will bring home an information sheet and a contract next week. Visit
Homework this week is to complete the Vision/Life board using the guidelines on the sheet and be prepared to share it with the class.
Thanks so much for any supplies you've sent! I'm looking forward to next Wednesday!
